Daylight Savings Update

4/4/2022

Kia ora tatou,

With a change of season and daylight savings change, we have some important notices that you need to be aware of.

Club Nights
  • Club nights are stopping over the winter months and will resume when daylight savings starts again.  Canoe bookings have been made for September onwards for club bookings.
  • Any paddler who is not in a squad or crew, please let us know and we can help find you a regular paddling spot.

Daylight Savings – Change of Paddling Requirements
With the change of paddling we are now into night paddling for the evening bookings.  Please ensure you observe the club rules:
  • V1, W1 and W2 canoes are not permitted for night-time paddling.
  • Night time paddling is recommended to be confined to the Harbour
  • Two lights per W6 must be mounted on the ama to comply with Maritime Law.
  • However with all the light clutter in the harbour all paddlers are recommended to wear headlamps, being seen is critical during the night-time paddling. The club have some but some bring their own.
  • All craft should have a communication device on board.
  • All paddlers are recommended to WEAR lifejackets for night-time paddling.  Once separated from a canoe no one can see you in the dark.

Bookings Update:
  • If you have a regular booking – please check on the club calendar and advise of any changes.
  • All canoes must be booked via our calendar before taking out.
  • The committee have also discussed the travelling of single and double canoes for individual training days or weekends away and have confirmed that the singles and doubles must stay at the shed for wider club use, unless they are booked for a Waka Ama NZ event.
  • Please familiarise yourselves with the Bookings and notifications part of the club rules.

Access to Canoes:
Please read the club rules regarding who has access to the double and single canoes. Quick reminders on this are:
  • Singles and doubles are only for use by full club members, affiliate members do not have access to these waka.
  • Authorised singles and doubles paddlers can use the waka and supervise those full members learning

Travelling Canoes:
For the singles and doubles travelling to regattas, the Pegasus singles and tempest doubles MUST be transported on suitable roof racks and in their travel bags.

Ships
We often use the shipping lane in the winter night time paddling:  Quick tips:
  • Remain outside the loading arms by 50m of the port of Tauranga
  • Avoid being in the shipping lane when tug boats are operating
  • If the Yellow Pilot boat is out that means a ship is either coming or going.
  • Ships cannot see you on the water and cannot move
  • Ships move faster than they appear.
  • Our shipping lane is extra busy, so please take care and be cautious.
  • If returning down the harbour and ships are being berthed, turned or are departing – you can always exit at the Sanford’s Ramp, walk around to get the trolley and head back.
Clothing
  • Dress warm for winter paddling, layers can be taken off.

Safety culture
  • Everyone’s voice in the waka counts. Please ensure your crew feel safe to speak up on safety issues, whilst on the water.

Hopefully this covers the key highlights.  All club members should know the club rules, so please ensure you read as a refresher.

Let’s have a safe and productive winter paddling season!  Take care, paddle hard and be safe.

Covid 19 in BOP - Message from our TMOCC H&S

20/11/2021

We now have multiple positive covid cases in Tauranga and the wider BOP area.
Although we remain at Alert level 2, we need to ensure that we exercise all precautions to minimise the spread of covid and follow Ministry of Health guidelines.

  • If you have any covid symptoms or are unwell, get a test and then stay at home.
    • Symptoms of COVID-19 include: a new or worsening cough, sneezing and runny nose, fever, temporary loss of smell or altered sense of taste, sore throat, and shortness of breath.
    • There are drive through testing stations popping up at various locations in the city and surrounds but also can be found at:
      • 2nd Ave
      • Racecourse
      • Phone your GP and ask where  your nearest location is
  • If you have been to a place of interest please follow the Ministry advice on their website.
  • Stick to your usual paddling team – no extras or visitors
  • Keep your distance from others as much as possible and wear a mask when you are not able to maintain distance (with the exception of actual paddling of course)
  • Hand wash and sanitise frequently
  • Clean the gear that you use
  • Ensure you sign in at the shed

If  you are not vaccinated please consider not paddling in a group to protect yourself and your team mates at this time.

Cultural Connections update

16/9/2021

Kia ora mai ano waka whānau,
A big mihi out and thank you for the feedback cultural connections received around joining and or contributing to our roopu. It is much appreciated.
We now have new members and some awesome cultural ideas, which we`re looking forward to sharing with everyone very soon, to further enhance our cultural connections with our beautiful Tauranga Moana.
Ngā mihi nu nui whānau,
Ora (on behalf of CC roopu).

Return to Covid Level 2

7/9/2021

Hopefully you're all well and fit and keen to get paddling again!  We've been here before but please spend 1 min reading to refresh yourself on the procedures for TMOCC under COVID Alert Level 2.

Level 2 limits group gathering to 100 persons outdoors and 50 people indoors.
  • Anyone with recent travel to Auckland or contact with people from Auckland should be extra cautious and self-isolate as much as possible, if you are an essential worker that crosses into Auckland region whilst they are under Level 3 and 4.
  • manage distancing of people to keep one metre apart – minimise contact on wakas when paddling.
  • inquire regarding the health of paddlers
  • ask people who have symptoms of COVID-19 not to enter – observe club signage
The need remains to have everyone (no exceptions) to adhere to: Effectively these become Club Operational Procedures - so please read every inch of the below.
  • Sign in on new register form at the shed - compulsory - even if you've got a regular booking slot, we need to know when you were in and out of the shed. This includes all W1/ W2 and W6 paddlers - no exceptions folks.
  • W6 steerer or Skipper to add all paddlers in their waka to the register (on one line is fine)
  • Singles / doubles and W6 teams are enabled for club members.   This means no visitors and no new paddlers for the time being – however we do include the 6 week course paddlers that are already registered.
  • Squad trainings continue, no paddlers from other regions joining a team, no “fill-ins”. So  for a team of 6, if someone in your established team cannot paddle – no fill ins from outside our TMOCC membership.
  • Practice Safe paddling –  W6's can paddle at night with lights etc - singles and doubles can't anyway refer to our normal club rules and operational procedures.
  • No paddling or using equipment if you are sick – you should be symptom free for 48 hours before going out.  Get a test at Community Clinic or phone the COVID health line 0800 3585453. Important to avoid spreading other winter bugs on top of COVID.
  • No paddling or using equipment if you are a contact of someone who is suspected of having or who has, COVID-19. Phone the COVID health line 0800 3585453  and discuss if uncertain.
  • Greetings / Goodbyes - It is still recommended to avoid hugs even though it has been said you can have a quick hug – try an elbow high five to greet friends
  • Wash hands/hand sanitise before touching equipment and paddling. Wash hands/sanitise after touching equipment others have touched.
  • Clean equipment with disinfectant after use – wash well with rubbing/scrubbing. Ministry has said that team sports equipment should be cleaned with disinfectant after each use.
  • Water brush wash waka (soapy wash for W1, V1 and W2s)  ,life jackets,  paddles, lashings, lights bailers, etc as listed as normal then lightly spray with disinfectant mix and allow to dry on waka - do not rinse off.

Disinfectant Cleaning is now resuming
At the end of a training using the sprayer provided please disinfectant everything you touch including:
  • Canoes - seats, gunnels and anything you touch
  • Paddles - spare paddles avoid touching others paddles
  • Lifejackets
  • Lashings used
  • Bailers
Authorised W1 / W2 Paddlers please remember to do the washdown procedures for the W1 and W2 (soapy water and derigging and rerigging tempest, pegasus and maui canoes).  This is aimed at avoiding fixings and fastenings corrosion inside the kiato.  You need to derig to clean and apply the salt away inside the kiato.
  • Using the disinfectant spray provided:
    • Padlocks
    • Chain for roller door
    • Door handles touched
Tracing:
We already have a sign in sheet at the shed and everyone (each individual) who enters the shed or uses equipment needs to sign it – needs date, time, first and last name and what canoe you paddled in.   Also note we have added a phone number column for the phone that is taken on the waka.  We are asking that all waka take at least one communication device whilst out on the water.  Phone bags are available and you can tuck the phone into the front or back of a lifejacket

Direct from the COVID Website:
Mandatory record keeping comes into effect from 11:59 pm on 7 September 2021.
Everyone aged 12 and over legally must keep a record of where they have been when visiting certain places so contact tracing can happen quickly. You must do this at all Alert Levels.
The club has a COVID tracer code on the door and table.
A really important part of level 2 and 1 is contact tracing. If we do have a positive case, we need to be able to quickly and correctly trace all contacts.

Please remember all training's MUST be booked via Liz Webster (Bookings Officer)- well in advance (not 1 hour before or 5mins before or after ) - this is also part of our contact tracing

Cheers
TMOCC Executive and Health and Safety Committees

Cultural Connections Roopu Callout

31/8/2021

Kia ora koutou waka ama whānau,

This is a call out for interest by clubbies wanting to participate within the cultural connections roopu that sits within our club committee.

So a little bit of background: the cultural connections (CC) was formed about two years ago, after it became apparent of the lack of cultural guidance around waka ama pertaining to karakia, rāhui, waka naming and unveiling, correct use and spelling of kupu (words), tikanga around waka, pōwhiri for visiting paddlers both locally and internationally, as well as visiting clubs. The last two years has seen a huge improvement with CC sitting alongside the committee and contributing from a tikanga Māori perspective.

Moving forward….CC is looking for any interested paddlers who would like to be part of CC and contribute to the kōrero of our club. Think about what it is you can contribute, you don`t need to have whakapapa to Tauranga Moana, it`s more about having an interest in upholding and maintaining the cultural integrity and māna of our club.

Kia haumaru whānau, Ora, Karoha, Jacinda, Paora. Please email me: [email protected] Ph / text: 02102229324
