Come and have a go...!

2025 SIX-SESSION Beginner Paddler Introduction Programme

2025 Course
Oct/Nov
Commencing Saturday 11th October (FULLY SUBSCRIBED)

Welcome to the sport of Waka Ama also known as Outrigger Canoe.

What is a Waka Ama?
A waka ama or waka for short, is a canoe with an ama (outrigger) on one side to help with balance. They range in size from the a 6-seater (which is 12 meters long), down to double and single seat canoes.

Who can do it ?
Waka Ama includes all ages from 7 yrs and up, with men’s, women’s and mixed divisions. (Our oldest member is over 80 yrs old).

Our Six-Session Beginner Course is for adults. (20+)

How hard is it?
The sessions are usually around 45-60 mins on the water and are low intensity, if you can walk around the Mount, then you will find these sessions easy.

What should I wear?
Something comfortable, shorts and t-shirt/thermal top, jandals or boat shoes. Jeans and long pants are not suitable. Training usually lasts about 1 hour, so we recommend having a drink bottle, a towel and some warm clothing for afterwards. You won't need to bring a water bottle in the waka.

Do I need my own paddle?
No, we supply the waka, life jackets, paddles and an instructor. The club has training paddles available for use. (You may want to look at purchasing your own paddle later if you love the sport!)

Do I need to attend all Six Sessions?
Ideally YES! Each waka has 6 seats, and it is important to have every seat filled, especially with beginners, and each session builds technique & skills from the previous week. We need to know numbers in advance so we can ensure we have enough steerers & kaihoe to keep everyone safe.

NB: Waka Ama is weather dependant! Safety is paramount!
We will provide SIX BEGINNER SESSIONS between October and November
