We recently completed our 2nd Takapuna Beach Cup and really enjoyed it, if you are thinking about giving it go, read on.
I was just in the throes of putting together a little post-race report to share with the rest of our club members, and I thought that there might be other people interested in reading it too, so here it is. Where is it? Takapuna Beach Auckland, New Zealand What is it? There are 3 days of racing, with the main focus being the 42km changes race and the 35km iron race around Rangitoto Island. The W1 relay race on the Sunday is also becoming very popular. How much does it cost? We always try to get by as cheap as possible (but I think we may have cut the accommodation too fine this year). Once we include Entry Fees, Support Boat Hire, Canoe Hire (we bring our own), Transport Costs (Tauranga-Auckland), Accommodation, Boat Supplies it worked out about $210 – $230 each. We did the 42km race only; it may cost more/less depending on your choices, obviously if you stay in the Hilton then the cost will be north of that. How do you know if your team is ready for it? The race times this year ranged between 3-5 hours. At a minimum be prepared to be paddling for 4 hours. You will also need to have a practice at doing water changes unless you are doing the iron race. We practiced our water changes by doing loops in front of a jetty; you can also use two canoes offshore and anchor one to use it as a platform. You will need to think about things like food and hydration during the race, they are really important factors. When is it? 19-21st Feb 2016, plenty of time to train for it, see you there… http://www.takapunabeachcup.com/ Comments are closed.
